Sandbox Studio
Welome to the sandbox
My favorite experiences in music are those moments where I’ve “lost myself”. Reality and my sense of self melt away. It’s like I’m playing in a sandbox, inventing worlds.
CONNECTIONS
I created this space based on tech that inspires me. As a kid, my favorite recording was “Switched On Bach” by Wendy Carlos. The delicate logic of Bach’s music performed by the other-worldly timbres of early Moog synthesizers engendered a lifelong love of analog synths. I’ve assembled a “septet” that blends old tech, new builds, and holds worlds of possibilities
The Toys
We all remember a favorite toy. One that we returned to again and again. I have 2 instruments that I’m particularly connected to. One is a Fender Rhodes 73 Mark I “loaned” (later gifted) to me by Tim Lefebvre (friend, incredible bassist) over 20 years ago. The other is my piano. My parents bought a Yamaha G2 baby grand in 1980 when my sister and I became “serious” about studying music. I know this axe like I know myself. I have a 40+ year relationship practicing, performing, and recording on it
PLaytime!
In many ways, music is like playing games. Sometimes there are “rules” to follow, evenif we make them up as we go. Stylistic conventions or genre-specific norms inform the play and give it structure. The boundaries give us places to rub up against and make things interesting. Other times, it can be completely free. We’re playing Cowboys and Indians and you want to be a robot riding a dinosaur? LET’S PLAY!
